Carnatic Vocal (Alternate) 201A

Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of the Swaras and Swarasthanas in Carnatic Music would be good. Alternatively, students who have completed CVOC 103 with the Academy or HVOC 102 with the Academy are suitable to choose this as an elective course.

Overview

This course will focus on 3, very beautiful, well known and popular compositions. The compositions are in the Ragams Bowli, Kapi and Revathi. The first is Sriman Narayana, a composition by Annamacharya who is also fondly known as Annamayya. This song is in the ragam Bowli and set to Adi thalam. Bowli is an early morning ragam and this composition clearly conveys that mood. This song has been immortalized by the voice of the nightingale of Classical music, Smt.M.S. Subbulakshmi. The next is Enna Thavam seidane, a tamil composition by Papanasam Sivan. Sivan was fondly called the Tamil Thyagaraja or Thyagayya. This song is in the Ragam Kapi and is set to Adhi thalam. A very well known compostion on Lord Krishna and his mother Yashoda, this song features as a thukkada in most concert platforms. Bho Shambho, a composition in Ragam Revathi and set to Adi Thalam by HH Swami Dayananda Saraswati. This song is a favourite with not only classical musicians but also with classical dancers. This song also has rhythmic syllables like Dhimita kitathom etc woven into its melody.
