One of the most important forms in Carnatic music ie. Tana Varnam is taught which lays the foundation for all further learning. Krithis are also introduced in this course. Krithi is the highest musical form. It has clear divisions in terms of Pallavi, Anupallavi, and Charanam. Basic varisais will be practiced in new ragams.

Objectives

Tana Varnam as the name suggests are important for singing Tanams (most advanced concept of carnatic music). Apart from this they are wholesome compositions from which Raga, Tala, Swara prayogams, Swara patterns, Raga alapana, neraval and swaraprasthara can all be grasped and learnt. Keerthanas  is a precursor to the kriti form of music. Keerthanas are generally in praise of God, pleading to God or narrating some mythological events. The students will learn and be introduced to sabha gana (songs which can be sung in concerts).

Learning outcomes

 At the end of the course the student should be able to

Sing the varnams taught so far in two speeds.

 Sing the devarnama and the tarangam.

Create swara passages in hamsadhwani, kalyani , hindolam.

 

Alankarams (3 speeds ) in Shankarabaranam, Mayamalavagowla,Shuddha Saveri and Mohanam Dhaatu varisais in 3 speeds in the above 4 ragams. 2 swarajathis (eg. Ra ra venu and Sambashivayanave) 1 Lakshana Geetham Sarali varisais and janta varisais should be sung as akaram in 3 speeds and 4 ragams.

Student must complete CVESa exam with a passing grade of Honors or above
