  • If the student misses a class, a make-up class will be provided as per the Make-up Class Policy (see below)
  • If a student is absent for more than 2 classes without providing any e-mail notification to the Academy, the batch will be closed for the student.
  • The student may rejoin the batch for the same course within a maximum of 30 days from the last class attended.  Failure to do so will result in the forfeiture of the batch.
  • On rejoining within 30 days from the last class attended, the Academy may assign a different teacher or time slot to the student.  The student will be required to buy add-on classes equal to the number of classes missed by the student to continue the batch.
  • After 30 days since the last class attended the student would be required to re-enroll to the course again.

Make Up Class Policy

A make-up class is a free class that is provided out of turn.
A make-up class may be offered by the Academy for the following reasons:
  • If a class is cancelled due to the unavailability of the teacher or due to technical problems arising from the Academy's (Teacher's) end, a make-up class is provided in lieu of it.
  • Student requests a reschedule  - a maximum of 2 classes will be provided by the Academy for a course (inclusive of add-on classes) if the student is absent or requests a reschedule.*
  •  The make-up class should be availed before the next scheduled class to ensure continuity of the course. All make up classes will be scheduled within the 12 weeks +add-on class (if any) of a batch.
*Make-up classes cannot be availed by in-campus students in a group class. Please speak to the centre co-ordinator for specific policies.

Add On Class (Additional Class) Policy

  • Course curriculum is designed to cover all the lesson plans in 12 classes.  However, the Academy reserves the right to suggest add-on classes to students in order to achieve the desired learning outcomes of the course and providing high quality learning. *
  • Teachers may recommend extra one-on-one sessions for a student with specific learning objectives.
  • A student is required to complete these one-on-one sessions before a batch is considered closed.
  • If a student does not buy these add-on classes within 2 weeks of the last attended class, Attendance Policy (see above) will be applied for batch closure.
Add-on classes may be availed:
  • By students who need or desire to spend more time in a course
  • Students who have been absent for more than 2 classes
  • If recommended by the teacher to enable the student to learn specific concepts or compositions.
  • A mutually convenient time slot will be scheduled for add-on classes.
  • If the student fails to attend a scheduled add-on class, there will be no refunds or rescheduling of the add-on class(es).
  • If the student fails to purchase add-on classes within 2 weeks after the last scheduled class, the Academy may assign her a different time slot than her regular class
*Add-on classes for in-campus (offline) classes are subject to availability of venue. The pricing for the same will vary based on the affiliate centre.

Course Progression and Requirements

Shankar Mahadevan Academy currently offers certificate programs in Carnatic/Hindustani classical vocal styles and Voice Gym programs. Carnatic and Hindustani certificate programs have a defined, structured curriculum.

Students who opt for courses other than a beginner's course would be required to submit a pre-requisite assessment. This assessment is graded by our Curriculum Head. The student is then advised to join the particular level depending on his/her singing capability and performance on the assessment.

After completing the course within a level with a passing grade, students can advance to the next course

Certification Course and Audit Course

Students who enroll into Hindustani (levels Hindustani Vocals 103 and above), Carnatic (levels Carnatic Vocals 103 and above) or Voice Gym courses are to receive a grade and a certificate at the end of their course. However, those who do not wish to complete assessments and be evaluated or graded for a course may choose to Audit a course.

Please note that once a student selects to "Audit" a course, the student will be automatically be considered as an "Audit" student for all the subsequent courses in the program

For an audit student to come back as a credit student, the student may re-enroll into the courses after completing the pre-requisites and complete assessments and gain a Credit Certificate.

Auditing a Course

An audit course is one in which the student is assessed only for learnability and not for proficiency.

The Academy recognizes students who wish to just sing and be in the moment and do not desire the extra rigor required to complete assessments and gain a Credit Certificate.
  •  The Academy will NOT provide any certificate for audit courses.
  • For Audit courses, the student would not be required to submit any assessments.
  • A student may opt to "Audit" a course within the first six classes of a course.
  • If the student has not submitted any assessments within the first six classes, the Academy will assume the course to be an "Audit" course for the student.
  • The teacher will assess the student in the final class and evaluate the student to promote them to the next course or suggest Add-on classes (or in some cases, repeat the current course).
  • If the student has chosen to get Credit for the course but fails to complete an assessment before the due date, the teacher reserves the right to do the assessment in class.
  • A student may not audit a course after the beginners level i.e. starting level 201 in Hindustani or Carnatic Vocals

Milestone Level Exams

    • To ensure that we have students who are learning at the Academy also attain the skills and confidence to perform on par with the best students of their genre, our students would be required to take “Level Exams” after completing each Level - Sa, Re/ Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha & Ni
  • Taking these exams after completing the milestone course is mandatory for those who desire a certification in their course.
  • The examiner would be either the CC or an external examiner for the student
  • The exams are for Hindustani and Carnatic classical genres only
    • Sa exam is for courses 101-103 for HV and CV
    • Re exam is for courses 104-108 for HV - Ri exam 104-109 for CV
    • Ga exam is for courses 201-205 for HV and CV
    • Ma exam is for courses 205-210 for HV and CV
    • Pa exam is for courses 301-308 for HV and CV
    • Dha exam is for courses 309-316 for HV and CV
    • Ni exam is for courses 401-409 for HV and CV

Assessment Policy for Certification Courses

Students in certificate programs are graded based on their attendance, assignments and final assessments. Each student's grade will depend on the total marks she receives for all assignments and the summative class performance.

  • Students will receive a report card and certificate signed by Shankar Mahadevan at the end of the course.
  • Students will be expected to turn in their assessments on a regular basis.

If assessment submission goes beyond the course end date, the student will be automatically considered for an Audit Course.

Students in Hindustani and Carnatic Vocals 100-series, levels 101 and 102 will not have graded assessments. Students will be required to submit practice recordings and would be provided feedback on their work, however, the submissions would not be marked or graded. Students will receive a report at the end of the course highlighting their overall course progress. Students will receive a 'Participation Certificate' at the end of 12 sessions.

Grading & Promotion Policy for Certification Courses

The grades received by the student at the end of a course will be based on the following percentages:

Grade                             Percent

High Honors                    90-100

Honors                           80-89

Satisfactory                    70-79

Course Complete             60-69

Needs Practice               0-59

N/A                                Withdrawal

Students receiving 59 or less percent in any course must retake that course and receive a Course Complete or higher grade in order to progress to the next course in the program.Full tuition must be paid for any course that needs to be retaken.

If a student believes their grade does not accurately reflect their performance, they should first contact their teacher to discuss. If they are unable to resolve the issue with their teacher, students can send an email to support@shankarmahadevanacademy.com, and should include their name, course, teacher, and the reason they feel the grade is incorrect. Grade disputes must be received within one week of course completion.

Add On Class (Additional Class)

Different students learn at different paces. While our curriculum is designed to cover all the lesson plans in 12 weeks, we understand that this may not be possible all the time for all the students. Also, as an Academy that stands for Quality, we encourage students to take time and effort to achieve the highest quality. For students who need or desire to spend more time in a course, we provide the option of purchasing “Add-On” Classes. These are one to one sessions with the teachers and may be requested:

  • If the student wishes to spend more time on specific concepts or if they have missed any classes.
  • Teachers can recommend add on classes to students to bring them up to speed.

A mutually convenient time slot will be scheduled for add-on classes. If the student fails to attend a scheduled add-on class, there will be no refunds or rescheduling of the add-on class(es).

Students will not be required to purchase addon classes for these courses (HV 100A, HV100B, HV100C, HV100D, HV101, HV102 and CV 100A, CV100B, CV100C, CV100D, CV101, CV102) unless the students has missed classes and have availed their alloted make-up class (if any)
